The United Arab Emirates has issued a strong condemnation of the Houthi group’s recent threats directed at Saudi Arabia, which include warnings of a potential maritime blockade against the kingdom. In its official statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged the international community to enforce existing United Nations Security Council resolutions that pertain to Yemen and the security of maritime routes in the Red Sea.
The ministry underscored the importance of Resolution 2216, which is focused on Yemen, as well as Resolution 2722, which emphasizes the protection of navigation rights and the freedom of movement within the Red Sea. These resolutions are seen as crucial to maintaining stability and ensuring the safe passage of vessels in the region.
Furthermore, the UAE stressed that the freedom of navigation in international waters is a right guaranteed under international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. This principle is central to preventing any disruption in maritime trade and ensuring the security of international shipping lanes.
In expressing its stance, the UAE also reaffirmed its unwavering support for Saudi Arabia, emphasizing solidarity with the kingdom. The UAE’s statement highlighted its commitment to backing all measures that aim to protect Saudi Arabia’s security and stability in the face of such threats.
