Saudi Arabia and Greece have pledged to enhance their cooperation in energy, investment, and security, as Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met in Riyadh to mark a century of diplomatic relations. The leaders emphasized the importance of securing international shipping routes and maintaining steady energy supplies, citing concerns over attacks on energy infrastructure and their potential impact on global markets.
Energy collaboration was a focal point of the discussions, with both nations agreeing to expedite work on an electricity interconnection project that would facilitate power exchanges between Saudi Arabia and Europe via Greece. Additionally, they explored opportunities for exporting clean hydrogen from Saudi Arabia to Greece and other European Union markets, alongside investments in renewable energy, conventional energy, and petrochemicals.
The meeting also highlighted plans to strengthen economic ties in infrastructure, construction, logistics, and technology sectors. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached approximately $1.7 billion in 2025, reflecting increasing commercial engagement. Digital connectivity was another area of focus, with progress on the EMC submarine cable project, aimed at enhancing communications infrastructure between East and West, being welcomed by both sides.
Saudi Arabia encouraged Greek companies to invest in its major development initiatives, such as the Riyadh Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup, while Greece invited Saudi investment in transport, energy, logistics, digital infrastructure, and advanced technologies. The leaders further agreed to bolster defence and security cooperation, focusing on counterterrorism, cybersecurity, intelligence sharing, and professional training.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to international climate agreements, supporting collaboration in carbon management, artificial intelligence, space technology, healthcare, education, tourism, and culture. These discussions build on the strategic partnership council established in 2022, underscoring the growing importance of Saudi-Greek relations in energy security, international trade, and regional connectivity.
