The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia are intensifying their military cooperation against Houthi forces in Yemen, with the UAE reportedly agreeing to resume financial support for Yemeni government forces and Saudi Arabia pledging air support for the coalition. This renewed collaboration comes amid escalating security concerns over Houthi advances and attacks in the region.
Relations between the UAE and Saudi Arabia could see improvement as a result of this cooperation, despite previous disagreements over Yemen’s political landscape and the role of southern separatist groups. The UAE had previously supported and trained several southern military units before withdrawing its involvement in Yemen earlier this year.
Amid these developments, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has launched a counteroffensive to regain control of key territories, including areas near Marib and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. However, progress in these efforts has been limited due to ongoing fighting and security threats in the region.
The conflict has exacerbated regional tensions, particularly for Saudi Arabia, which has been the target of drone and missile attacks attributed to the Houthis. In response, Egypt has shown willingness to consider defensive measures to protect Saudi Arabia, while the United Kingdom is reviewing requests for additional military assistance.
The ongoing conflict continues to worsen the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, with over 200,000 people reportedly displaced since August. This displacement has placed additional pressure on humanitarian organizations that are providing emergency assistance to those affected by the violence.
