This preparation comes amid global health concerns, including recent outbreaks of Ebola in Africa and rising worries about hantavirus infections. Saudi health authorities have emphasized that their surveillance and emergency response systems are ready to ensure the safety of pilgrims during this significant religious gathering.
To mitigate health risks, Saudi officials have implemented enhanced travel monitoring and health checks for visitors coming from nations such as Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Pilgrims have already begun arriving in Makkah, engaging in preliminary visits to key religious sites like the Grand Mosque, Jabal Al Nour, and the hills of Safa and Marwa ahead of the official commencement of Hajj.
Security measures have also been bolstered at airports and along primary pilgrimage routes, a necessary step given the escalating regional tensions involving Iran and Gulf countries. Saudi Arabia has expressed concerns over potential drone attacks, further justifying the increased security presence. These efforts aim to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees as they participate in this spiritual journey.
In addition to health and security precautions, efforts have been made to shield worshippers from the intense summer heat. Officials have expanded shaded areas and stationed at least 34 medical units close to major holy sites to offer medical assistance throughout the pilgrimage. These measures are part of a broader strategy to accommodate the needs of the pilgrims, ensuring a safe and fulfilling experience during their time in Makkah.
