Stock Pressure Mounts as 911.5 Million SpaceX Shares Now Tradable

SpaceX is bracing for possible selling pressure as a massive tranche of up to 911.5 million shares becomes eligible for trading. This development provides certain employees and early investors the chance to sell shares acquired before the company’s landmark initial public offering (IPO). On Wednesday, the stock experienced a nearly 14% drop, closing at $108.27, marking its second-largest single-day decline. This leaves the shares approximately 20% below the IPO price of $135. The downturn comes just weeks after SpaceX made its debut on the public market.

Initially, SpaceX offered only a limited portion of its shares for public trading, which created a constrained supply and heightened demand post-IPO. The upcoming release of shares is set to significantly increase the available shares for investors, potentially leading to short-term volatility. However, the release of these shares doesn’t imply that all 911.5 million shares will be sold at once. Employees and early investors retain the option to either hold onto their shares or sell them, especially those who bought shares at much lower valuations before the IPO might be inclined to cash in on profits.

To manage this transition, SpaceX has adopted a staggered schedule for releasing restricted shares, moving away from the traditional single lock-up period. Additional releases are expected later this year, which could make billions more Class A shares available for trading. Senior executives, including Elon Musk, face a longer restriction period for their shares compared to the latest release. Given that Musk’s holdings constitute a significant portion of SpaceX’s value, future executive share unlocks will be crucial for investors to watch.

The influx of publicly traded shares could also influence SpaceX’s position in the Nasdaq-100 index. Currently, its weighting is around 1%, but it could potentially rise above 3.5%, contingent on the stock price and the number of available shares at the time of the next index adjustment. While this share unlock may induce short-term selling pressure, it does not directly impact the core business operations of SpaceX. Investors are likely to continue focusing on the company’s financial performance, growth prospects, investments in artificial intelligence, and execution of long-term strategies.
