“Diplomacy Shifts as US Reconsiders G20 Boycott Amid South African Pushback”

South Africa has confirmed that the United States is reconsidering its intention to skip the G20 summit. President Cyril Ramaphosa said Washington had reached out to reopen discussions. Trump’s potential attendance remains uncertain.

Earlier this month, Trump criticized South Africa for alleged abuses against white farmers. Pretoria rejected the accusations. The claims contributed to the initial American decision to stay away from the summit.

Ramaphosa described the US reconsideration as encouraging, despite its last-minute timing. He stressed that global forums benefit from full participation. According to him, avoiding dialogue undermines international cooperation.

A leaked US note insisting that no G20 declaration could be issued without American involvement angered South African officials. They called it coercive and warned it undermines multilateral processes. They emphasized that no absent country should dictate the forum’s outcomes.

South Africa’s G20 presidency emphasizes equity, sustainable growth, and global south representation. Ramaphosa expressed hope that major powers would participate constructively in shaping shared global solutions
