The cause of a deadly car explosion that killed eight people in Delhi remains a mystery, with the federal Home Ministry vowing to investigate “all angles.” The blast occurred Monday night at a busy intersection near the Red Fort, injuring 19 others and triggering a high alert in Mumbai and Uttar Pradesh.
Home Minister Amit Shah visited the blast site and confirmed that the investigation is in its early stages. He stated that the cause of the detonation is not yet known and will hinge on a detailed forensic analysis of samples collected from the wreckage. As part of the probe, the registered owner of the car that exploded has reportedly been detained for questioning.
The explosion happened just before 7 pm when a car, stopped at a red light outside the Red Fort metro station, suddenly detonated. Witnesses described the blast as “very strong,” with shock waves powerful enough to be felt in nearby buildings. The blast ignited a massive fire that destroyed over a dozen cars, rickshaws, and motorcycles.
Graphic accounts from witnesses have highlighted the horror of the event. One person described seeing a “hand on the road” and a body “torn into pieces.” Another witness, Om Prakash Gupta, reported seeing “body parts all over,” indicating the sheer violence of the explosion.
Dozens of fire engines and ambulances rushed to the scene to control the blaze and transport the 19 injured individuals to a government hospital. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered his condolences to the families of the victims. Security at major train stations across India has also been heightened in response to the incident.
