As the northern autumn sets in, a new 62-mile trail has been unveiled, offering an “almost perfect” series of “autumn ambles.” The Steel Cotton Rail Trail, between Manchester and Sheffield, is a 14-section route that perfectly captures the “magical moods” of the season.
The “classic northern autumn day” of low clouds, mizzle, and mist is the ideal backdrop for this trail. The world is “grey-filtered but for the glow of dead leaves,” creating a beautifully atmospheric walking experience.
This has also been a “mast year,” and the trail floor is a testament to it. Walkers will hear the “loud crunch of dry acorns and beech nuts” underfoot, particularly on level, wooded sections like the Peak Forest Tramway Trail.
The trail’s 14 rail-linked sections allow walkers to choose their perfect autumn walk. Whether it’s a misty moorland climb or a gentle riverside stroll to admire the “golds, reds and ochres” of the leaf litter, there’s a walk to suit.
This new, well-marked route is an “eye-calming” and accessible way to enjoy the season. It’s an invitation to explore the “post-industrial” landscapes of the Peak District, all just a short train ride away.
