The Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust has called the club’s entry into administration the “inevitable outcome of years of financial mismanagement.” The move, made by owner Dejphon Chansiri, has triggered a 12-point EFL penalty, dropping the Owls to -6 points.
The trust cited a “lack of accountability, and repeated failures to engage credible buyers” as reasons for the collapse. The club has been in financial turmoil, owing $pounds{}$1 million to HMRC and failing to pay staff wages in five of the last seven months.
The 12-point deduction leaves the club 15 points from safety, making relegation almost certain. Despite this, fans are “overjoyed” at Chansiri’s exit, and seats bearing his name were quickly removed from Hillsborough as a symbol of the “reset.”
Manager Henrik Pedersen met with the administrators, Begbies Traynor, on Friday morning. He told his “emotional” staff that the club needed a “fresh restart” and that he sees a “bright future” for the “fantastic club.”
The administrators are now seeking a new owner. The Supporters Trust is urging fans to end their boycotts and get behind the team, starting with Saturday’s match against Oxford. “Now begins the phase of renewal,” their statement read.
