Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that his country is facing one of the most difficult periods in its modern history, complicated by US pressure that threatens to fracture Western unity. Donald Trump is pushing Kyiv to accept a controversial peace deal involving territorial cessions to Russia, a plan European officials reject as capitulation.
The tension is amplified by Trump’s arbitrary deadline, setting Thanksgiving next Thursday as the “acceptable deadline” for Ukraine to sign the agreement. This swift and unilateral timeline has alarmed European leaders, who view the terms as dangerously one-sided, demanding major concessions that would permanently weaken Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Outside the presidential palace, Zelenskyy articulated the agonizing “impossible choice”: preserve national dignity or risk losing crucial support from a US administration actively trying to coerce Kyiv into accepting Moscow-friendly terms. He noted the immediate choice is between signing the deal and enduring another “extremely difficult winter.”
The President argued vehemently that the deal would strip Ukraine of its freedom, dignity, and justice. He cautioned strongly against trusting Russia, referencing the historical fact of two major invasions. He vowed to defend the constitution and never betray his people, invoking the defiance and refusal to surrender that marked 2022.
European leaders swiftly closed ranks, explicitly rejecting Trump’s proposed map, which would compel Ukraine to surrender cities and shrink its military. They stressed that any durable peace must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and must be negotiated from the existing line of contact, rather than terms dictated by Russia.
