The animated family film, a genre often defined by simple moral lessons and perfectly happy endings, is getting a dose of reality. “In Your Dreams,” a new adventure-comedy opening this Friday, is breaking the mold with a refreshingly honest message: “real families fight.” This central theme challenges the “false” narrative of the perpetually happy family, offering a more nuanced and validating portrayal of domestic life for young audiences.
This bold approach is what attracted star Simu Liu, who voices the father. Liu has publicly stated his frustration with the “always happy” trope, calling it “just not true.” He championed the film’s script, adding that “it’s important that kids have imagery of families that aren’t perfect.” His involvement underscores the film’s commitment to tackling complex issues head-on.
The film’s story is told through the eyes of children. Siblings Stevie (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport) and Elliot (Elias Janssen) are so distressed by the conflict between their parents (Liu and Cristin Milioti) that they seek a magical intervention. Their quest to find The Sandman to save their marriage provides the film’s adventure, blending fantasy with a very real emotional problem. The cast also features Craig Robinson as Baloney Tony.
Under the direction of Alex Woo (“Ratatouille” alum), the film avoids becoming overly somber. It infuses the journey with humor and heartfelt moments. A “beautiful” duet between the warring parents, Liu and Milioti, serves as a poignant reminder of the love that still exists. Milioti described the song as “really great,” highlighting its role in showcasing the family’s complex emotional landscape.
The most significant departure from the genre standard is the film’s conclusion. “In Your Dreams” refuses to offer an easy, magical fix. Instead, its young hero, Stevie, must learn and accept that “there is no magic solution to real-life problems.” This mature, honest resolution proves that animated films can be both entertaining and deeply truthful.
