‘disappointed’ pm carney vows to negotiate despite Trump’s halt

Canadian  prime minister Mark Carney said he was “disappointed” by US tariff hikes and the subsequent decision by president Trump to “terminate” all trade talks, but he vowed to continue seeking dialogue.

Trump’s move came after an ad from Ontario used a 1987 clip of Ronald Reagan  criticizing tariffs. Trump called the ad “fake” and “fraudulent.”

The president accused Canada of “egregious behavior” and attempting to interfere with US supreme court hearings on his 35% tariffs. Secretary of state Marco Rubio confirmed talks are suspended.

This leaves Carney in a tough spot. He recently met with Trump to ease tensions and prepare for a review of the usmca trade deal, which Trump has now soured on.

Carney stated he would also work on “diversifying export markets” to reduce Canada’s heavy reliance on the us, which currently receives over 75% of all Canadian  exports.
