The United States has introduced new tariffs of up to 100% on specific drone imports and components, aiming to bolster national security and lessen dependence on foreign supply chains, particularly those dominated by China. This policy specifically targets unmanned aircraft systems, with larger drones over 25 kilograms and those possessing national security-related features like thermal cameras and docking stations facing the steepest tariffs. Smaller drones will encounter a 25% tariff under this new directive.
In addition to the focus on larger drones, the US will impose tariffs on drones and components from several other key trading partners. Products originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subject to a 15% tariff, whereas imports from the United Kingdom will face a 10% tariff, provided the hardware, software, and technology come from the listed countries or the United States. These tariffs are set to be implemented starting September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are part of an effort to fortify the US defense and industrial base, stimulate domestic drone manufacturing, and create jobs within the country. A significant goal is to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, particularly as China currently holds a dominant position in the global drone market. Shenzhen-based DJI, for example, commands a large share of the US commercial drone market and has been subjected to previous US restrictions citing national security concerns.
US officials have raised alarms about the potential risks posed by foreign-made drones, including surveillance threats, sensitive data collection, and possible attacks. The US Federal Communications Commission has also advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate these risks. This move comes amid ongoing trade and technology tensions between Washington and Beijing, with China having previously introduced restrictions on drone exports to the US and taking action against various American companies.
